There are many different airbrush supplies needed for any kind of airbrushing project. These include an airbrush gun, airbrush paint and an airbrush compressor.
Airbrush Guns
With airbrush supplies, there are many different types of guns, and choosing one depends on if your going to use it for nails, tanning, background painting, shirts or tattoos. One thing to think about when picking out the right gun is internal verse external mixing. This is referring to whether the paint and air mix inside the head or not. If the two mix outside of the head then the outcome will be larger dots. Another thing to think about for airbrush supplies is whether the gun has dual or single action and whether the trigger controls the air and color or just the air. If it controls both, the artist does not have to stop their hand motion. Getting used to this technique may be slightly difficult though. You also have to think about where the paint is going to feed into the gun. Side, bottom and gravity feed are all possibilities. Airbrushes are another part of an airbrush gun. They can be high or low depending on how the airbrush needle, tip and head assembly are made.
Airbrush Paint
Some types of airbrushing have their own unique paints. For example, airbrush tanning and airbrush makeup come in a variety of different colors to suit the purpose. There is also airbrush tattoo ink for those who want body art but are not ready for something permanent. For airbrush supplies, there are some general types of airbrush paint. Water colors are well suited for airbrushing and are very transparent. Gouache, also called Tempera, has a white pigment added to it and is a little more transparent. Acrylics can be either opaque or transparent and are usually long lasting. As well, oil paint can also be opaque or transparent depending on how much it is thinned, but it has a long drying time. Lastly, there is sign paint, which is solvent based and needs to be used in a well ventilated area.
Airbrush Compressors
Without an airbrush compressor there would be no art all. The main components of an airbrush compressor are the CFM, or cubic feet of air per minute; the PSI, or the pounds of air pressure per square inch; the HP, or the horse power and the air tank, or how much air it can hold. For airbrush nail art or airbrush makeup, a lower PSI is desired and the air tank does not need to be very large. For wall art or background art, a higher PSI might be desired and a larger air tank would be required.
Different airbrush tips for your gun can be purchased, as well as airbrush supplies like airbrush stencils to make your designing easier. Many different companies offer total airbrush kit packages that include all the airbrush supplies you need to get started.
